Producing a smaller amount of garbage may seem like a neck – breaking task, difficult and a task that takes a lot of time. Indeed, at the beginning changing habits requires a bit more effort, but we can apply the principles of small steps, starting with seemingly insignificant activities. In addition, proper attitude and non-punishment for committed “sins” is necessary. All you have to do is take it easy, with consistency and distance. Is this connection possible? Yes! See for yourself!
An appropriate, sensible approach
It takes time to change habits and reduce waste production. Still, many people who think about implementing changes to their lives suffer from similar problems: “I have to change everything right away”, “I will be a hypocrite if I buy cosmetics in plastic, but I will go shopping with plastic bags”,
“I am not fit for this, I will certainly forget about not taking plastic bags”. Such examples can be multiplied.
Often, it seems to us, that there is only black and white, everything or nothing. That there is nothing in between. So let’s remember: not all at once! Start with minor changes. Do not worry about the opinions of others. Do your own. Even reducing the amount of rubbish for plastic bags, straws, some plastic packaging, disposable cutlery or small plastic bottles of drinks means a lot!
Remember that you do not have to be a zero waste immediately (unless it is possible to completely eliminate rubbish at all). All you need is less waste!
Action plan
Before you go to the first “no rubbish” shopping, get ready for it properly. Equip yourself with cotton bags for loose products: bread, fruits and vegetables, as well as strong, reusable shopping bags.
Also, think about what you want to give up in the first place. If you do not want to buy bottled water, consider purchasing a water filtering jug and a bottle that you fill with liquid before leaving the house. Ideally, these vessels should be glass, although just one plastic reusable bottle will be much better than small one time use bottles.
Also, remember not to throw away all the plastic bags and items you have at home right away. Use them as long as possible, finding a new use for them.
Consistency and common sense
Make plans, but do not make mistakes. If you bring a plastic bottle home, just try not to do it the next time. If you are hungry or thirsty and you will not be able to buy anything that will not generate waste, buy what you need, and next time try to think ahead.
And most importantly – health should always be in the first place. For example, do not give up buying medicines because they have plastic packaging. Eat healthily, even if you sometimes have to buy something in plastic. “Non – rubbish” solutions will come with time.
