All of you have probably seen an article about shark attacking humans, a picture showing aggressive shark or at least watched Jaws by Steven Spielberg. ;)|
But are those sharks really that dangerous?

Shark

This topic was recently discussed among the ecologists. How many times do we see news about sharks attacking people, and how often do we see articles about preservation of their species?
Statistically, over 60% of coverage and news present sharks in negative image, while only 7% talks about species’ preservation, biology and ecology.

The truth is that sharks are not as dangerous as we portrait them – most human casualties are the reason of sharks feeling threatened or mistaking humans with seals. (more…)

Hello Greenzoners! We already spoke about phytoplankton, sea otters and others. Now let’s talk about something more exotic – orangutans. 🙂
orangutan
Recently orangutan’s populaion on Sumatra island (south-east Asia) have undergone significant decline. For now there’s only 6,600 individuals left and orangutans are now endangered species. The reason of this reduction is, as it often occured, massive deforestation of tropical areas. (more…)

Hello Greenzoners, I hope you are having good day in which we greet you with new Eco News. 😉

mountain meadow

Mountain meadows are slowly declining and being destroyed in the Northern Pacific areas. Once huge tracts of green grass and  rare, wild flowers, now they are being dominated by spreading trees and other thick and territorialy invasive plant species. The reason behind this is progressing global warming and rising temperature (more…)

Hi Greenzoners! 🙂
As we are consuming more and more petroleum in our cars and heating systems, it is inevitable that our oil reserve is going lower and lower. We are running out of oil faster than we could expect, so that many scientists and industrial companies are making their efforts in discovering new types of energy.
Lignin

It was discovered that we can obtain energy from carbohydrates, which is to be found in some food products or wood. The second one consists of cellulose and hemicullulose, which is carbohydrades and lignin. It was already used during the production of paper, when 50% of wood was burnt and converted into bioenergy. Hello Greenzoners, we’d like to share with you with another Eco News, this one’s concerning really interesting and important issue – Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch.

garbage patch

What is this? It’s an accumulation of garbage, floating on the northern Pacific Ocean. It stretches to hundreds of miles and, if all this garbage would be gathered in one place, it would cover the surface almost as big as France.
It’s made of plastic, which is not biodegradable, so it flows forever. The garbage comes most of the times from beach (left unattended and then swept by waves), fishing boats and cargo ships.

Not only does it pollute the water, but also is dangerous to the underwater animals. Many sea species were found dead entangled in old fishing nets or poisoned by accidental swallowing plastic or steel leftovers. (more…)

Hello Greenzoners, as the future is becoming today, people are starting to exploit renewable sources of energy – new, amazing projects and designs are being created, to save the money on slowly depleting oil and to reduce the pollution of the environments.

Here are some very creative designs that presents modern constructions and homes depending on earth-based energy, such as geothermal energy.

Blog Contest – Reactivation!

October 7th, 2012

Hello Greenzoners! We are glad that some of you continue to partake in the Blog Contest.

But if you are not taking part in Blog Contest or your blog has been deactivated, now you get the chance to be one of the contestants. 😉 (more…)

Good morning Greenzoners, and this is the new Eco News. 😉

As we know, the extremely important plant ability is to absorb carbon-dioxyde (CO2) and emit oxygen.  It’s especially necessary for us when the CO2 emission is so huge.
Intensified pollution and gas emissions not only increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, but also degrades the soil.  It was recently discovered that unfertile, polluted soils may reduce the plants’ CO2 absorbing ability. (more…)

Hi Greenzoners!

Irene hurricane 2011

It was recently discovered, that the New York City’s water supply is contaminated and may pose a serious threat to the health. As New York is one of the most populated city in United States, this may affect very many lives. (more…)

Recently, there were reported many deaths of dolphins in the area of Gulf of Mexico – especially of younger dolphins, not long after their births. Ecologists estimated that these deaths are rather unusual, as six time more dolphins died than normally.
